Caring for an Elderly Relative

GrandparentBecoming a care giver for an elderly relative is always an emotional and difficult time but it is something that the majority of families will face at some time. When you start of become involved with another person in this way, it usually takes very little time to realize that you are not simply caring for the health of the person, but also all the other aspects of their day to day lives including outings, transport and very importantly, their finances.

Of course in the ideal world, a degree of wealth will have been built up over the years and it would simply be a case of managing this. However, in reality it is usually necessary to come up with a weekly or even daily budget to make sure that the person's money goes as far as possible and that they can pay for the essential items in life. It can help to look at the previous years incomings and outgoing (including pension, household bills etc) to give an idea of the situation that you are dealing with.

If possible it can be a good idea to put some money aside for the elderly person on their behalf for a rainy day (i.e. if external care has to be paid for at some point or if that person has to go into a home for instance). You may find that it may be necessary to give a little extra help if possible in the field of heating and household bills. This can often prove an area of difficulty for elderly people and it is well known how unsympathetic utility companies can be if a bill goes unpaid. Having heating lost to the home of an elderly person can be the difference between life and death.

The job of caring for an elderly relative, whatever their relationship to you, can be very rewarding. However, it can also be very stressful. Until you go through it it is impossible to understand how stressful this can be. Even if you aren't with the person all day, it will be all you will generally think about even when you aren't there and can be a very upsetting situation at times. It is important to recognise the signs of stress as react accordingly.
